Frequently asked questions
What are the benefits of ballroom dancing?
Dancing is a wonderful hobby that you and your significant other can enjoy for a lifetime. It provides a fantastic way to stay active and fit, opens doors to meet new people, and helps build lasting friendships. If you’re getting married soon, imagine the pride of impressing your guests with a beautifully choreographed first dance. Plus, with dance skills in your repertoire, you’ll never feel out of place at weddings, nightclubs, or other social gatherings. Embrace the rhythm of life together, and let the dance floor become your shared stage.
How do I begin learning?
New students begin with an introductory private lesson. This is helpful even for experienced dancers, as it gives the instructor a chance to acquaint you with the studio’s teaching system. It also allows them to assess your strengths and weaknesses, determine your current level, and personalize your instruction to help you meet your dance goals.
What are Private Lessons?
Private lessons are one-on-one sessions, whether taken individually or as a couple. You learn at your own pace with a dedicated instructor who tailors the lesson to your needs. These lessons not only teach dance patterns and steps but also provide technique, styling, and the foundational skills needed to become a confident dancer.
What are Group Lessons?
Group instruction primarily focuses on your dancing patterns (steps). Group lessons involve multiple people under the direction of one instructor. The classes generally focus on one or two dances and introduce you to various step patterns. Group lessons generally run for a series of weeks, teaching you the patterns appropriate for a certain level of expertise.
Which lesson is right for me?
Ideally, a combination of both private and group instruction offers the best results. Group classes focus primarily on patterns and steps, while private lessons help develop partnership skills. Group classes are great for couples, while private lessons are ideal for individuals or those with specific needs or time constraints. Private instruction also allows the teacher to personalize your lessons and proceed at a pace that’s comfortable for you.
How often should I take lessons?
When you’re new to dancing, consistency is key. We recommend taking at least two lessons per week to retain what you’ve learned and make steady progress. More frequent lessons not only improve your skills faster but also make better use of your investment. Infrequent visits often lead to relearning instead of advancing.
How do I practice my dancing?
The studio offers opportunities for practice through regularly scheduled sessions and dance parties. These events provide a fun, supervised “nightclub” environment where you can build confidence, learn to navigate the floor, and dance with multiple partners. Don’t wait until you feel “ready”—jump in! You’ll improve faster and have more fun along the way.
What do I wear to my lesson?
We recommend wearing clothing that allows you to move freely and comfortably. Many women prefer loose slacks or full skirts, while men often find polo or sport shirts paired with relaxed-fit slacks to be ideal. Sweat clothes are not recommended.
What shoes do I wear?
Shoes with a thin, flexible sole are best for men. Women should wear a heel, as it’s the typical choice when dressing up and provides better balance for ballroom dancing. Avoid sneakers, athletic shoes, or any footwear with thick or rubber soles. While comfortable, these shoes can make it difficult to move properly and may increase the risk of injury. Our studio dance store offers a selection of shoes designed specifically for dancing.
What if I need to cancel my lesson?
We understand that sometimes your scheduled appointment may no longer be convenient. We’re happy to help you reschedule to a more suitable time, but we kindly ask that you provide at least 24 hour notice. This allows your instructor time to accommodate another student in your original slot. Please note that the studio reserves the right to charge for lessons canceled on short notice. While lessons are nonrefundable, we do offer transferable studio credit.
How much will it cost?
Your dance journey can be tailored to your budget. Whether you’re looking for a single lesson or a full package, we offer flexible pricing options. Visit our Calendar & Events page for upcoming events or contact us directly — we’re happy to help you find the best fit for your goals and schedule.
